Using the Shape Editor Tool, create a vertical and a horizontal line. Both lines should intersect at the inside end of the spiral. Draw some additional short lines in the corners as shown. The new lines are shown in red. Change the line Width to 4pt.
TIP: To constrain a line to vertical or horizontal, Click on the page with the Shape Editor Tool to place the first control point. Hold down the Ctrl key then click and drag the line. Depending on which direction you drag, the line will snap to horizontal, vertical, or to one of several angles.
Using the Selector Tool, drag a selection marquee around all the objects. If you do not have anything else on the page you can use Ctrl a (Or Edit > Select All).
NOTE: The selection marquee (rectangle) needs to be drawn outside all the object in order to select.
From the Arrange menu, select Convert Line to Shape. This changes all the lines to individual shapes which can now be filled. With all the shapes selected, Arrange > Combine Shapes... Add Shapes . This creates a single shape with one continuous outline.
Copy the shape to the clipboard (Ctrl c)
We now have the pattern for the lead. The next step is to create all the individual glass shapes.
